A calm, practical used-car viewing checklist

A repeatable inspection helps you notice condition and paperwork before excitement takes over.

01

Before you travel

Confirm the registration, VIN availability, service history and number of keys. Run legitimate history and MOT checks using the exact vehicle details.

02

On the driveway

Look for mismatched paint, uneven tyres, warning lights and signs the engine was warmed before you arrived. Every switch should work.

  • Check fluids only when safe to do so.
  • Inspect tyre age as well as tread.
  • Test both keys and every charging cable supplied.
03

On the test drive

Use town speeds, a rough surface and a faster road where legal. The car should track straight, brake cleanly and restart without warning messages.
