The best family cars: space where it actually counts

Boot figures tell only part of the story. A great family car also needs wide-opening doors, useful rear space, calm road manners and controls you can operate without fuss.

01

Estate or SUV?

SUVs offer easier entry and a higher seating position, while estates often provide a longer, more useful boot with lower running costs. Choose around access and load shape, not fashion.

02

The family test drive

Bring the equipment you use. Check whether a rear-facing child seat compromises the front passenger, whether the parcel shelf has somewhere to go and whether the boot lip becomes awkward.

  • Open every door in a narrow parking space.
  • Check Isofix access rather than just its presence.
  • Try the infotainment while keeping your eyes up.
03

Our shortlist logic

The Octavia is the space champion, the Tucson adds SUV access and generous equipment, and the Corolla Touring Sports combines estate usefulness with impressive hybrid economy.
